Remove Viruses to Protect Your Valuable Data

Learn the types of computer viruses. the ways they can infect your systems and damage your valuable data, and how to keep your devices and networks safe

Protecting your company's computer networks from viruses is more important today than it ever has been. With mounting virus-borne attacks and a greater need for system security, protection is a top priority.

If your company has already been hit by a computer virus, you want to trust recovery and repair work to a company that's an expert in virus removal in San Francisco Bay Area.

What Is Virus Removal?

Virus removal is a broad category of computer maintenance. It's a process that uses sophisticated software to scan, detect, contain and eradicate threats from viruses, malware, adware or other destructive programs that can give hackers a pathway to your most sensitive data.

Virus prevention is a related set of software programs that acts as a protective layer of defense that prevents viruses, Trojan horses, adware, worms and other attack vectors before they can gain a foothold in your computers.

Are All Computer Viruses the Same?

Computer viruses come in many forms, each with a different mode of attack and a different anticipated outcome. Here's a look at the most common:

  • Boot Sector Virus. Targeting computer systems, boot sector viruses replicate code to sections of hard drives or floppy discs. On startup, the code is embedded in computer memory where it can infect other discs.
  • Direct Action Virus. One of the most common types, direct action viruses are called non-resident types because they do not install themselves or remain in memory. Instead, they attach themselves to file types (typically .exe. or .com files). When those files are activated, the virus springs to life, looking for similar files to attach to.
  • Multipartite Virus. Typically, viruses act in one of two ways -- either to spread themselves or to deliver a malicious payload. The multipartite does both, spreading in different ways and taking different actions within a computer or system. For example, they can infect both the boot sector and executable files, leading to fast actions, rapid spread and challenging removal.
  • Overwrite Virus. These viruses are frustrating and destructive in that they delete the contents of the files they infect. In most cases, the only way to get rid of the files is to remove the infected files, whether it's one standalone file or an entire application.
  • Polymorphic Virus. These viruses are often difficult to detect with common anti-virus programs, often taking weeks or months to eradicate. It's all in the name: Polymorphic viruses change their signatures each time they replicate, meaning anti-virus software apps, many of which rely on those signatures for identification, don't block the files using typical blacklisting techniques.
  • Resident Virus. Another common virus type, resident viruses are installed deep within the computer and can remain there even if the original source is eradicated. This property makes them hard to find.
  • Spacefiller Viruses. A rare virus type also known as a cavity virus, the spacefiller virus looks for the empty space that is common within a file. By doing so, the virus does not damage the original code or increase the file size, allowing it to bypass some common detection techniques.
